In the heart of the mesmerizing rolling fields, resided a boy named Shepherd. His life was essentially untarnished, simple yet virtuous. His main role was essentially to care for his flock of rams.
Their gentle baas and the murmuring of the wind among the solo tree on the hilltop were his only co-dwellers. Day in day, watching over his responsibilities inculcated in him a sense of quiet fulfillment.
But, there were at times moments of isolation, when the shepherd boy would long for fellowship. In one such instance from sheer boredom, the shepherd boy orchestrated a mischievous plan.
Narratives of wolves hunting on sheep had long been circulating in the town. So, the boy chose to exploit this fear and played a prank on the villagers.
One afternoon he ran into the village shouting “Wolf! There is a wolf website attacking my sheep!” The frightened villagers sprinted up the hills to offer assistance but found no wolf.
The boy laughed at the confusion on their faces. This prank laughed for a couple of more days. However, one day, a real wolf did attack the flock. The shepherd boy dashed for help, screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one showed up.
Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but could protect only few of his flock. Heartbroken, he went back to the town only to receive a reprimand on honesty and the results of dishonesty.
His tale of this shepherd boy has been passed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the significance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the perils of false alarms. Moreover, it stresses how trust once violated, is tough to reclaim. It's a story as pertinent today as it was anciently.
